The International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) has been in use since the 1960s. With the American version released and updated by the United States Department of Health & Human Services, it functions in essence as a cross-indexed list of diagnosis of disease, conditions and injuries - a lingua franca for healthcare providers of all sizes. We began including ICD-9 CD-Roms in all of our packages in 2002, as the requests for this information clearly pointed to a gap in the healthcare community between those familiar and those unfamiliar with the system.
